Hello friends,
This was a message emailed to me through charterschoolmom.com. I thought that more than one perspective would be helpful. What is your advice?
Our charter school will open in September, 2009, here in Nevada. We will service grades K-8. The district in which we are located is not supportive of our endeavor. They have made several negative, erroneous statements in public, yet they refuse our invitation for an open dialogue about this school. We started this school after trying, unsuccessfully for four years, to work with the district to have more services for the Gifted and Talented students, ie, more GT Specialists and more teacher training for gifted characteristics. Our superintendent told a group of parents, who had tried to discuss this issue with her, that if they weren't happy with the schools in Elko, they were free to move. It's been downhill from there, in my opinion. Will it change? Do districts come around if it started our as a negative relationship? Our district is the only one in Nevada that refused the offer from the state department to become a sponsor of charter schools. Any ideas on how we might move towards a better, more workable relationship?
