Hello Charter School Directory Examiners!
This is what you will find in this email:
· Explanation of the charter school directory and suggested uses
· Helpful Charter School Facts
· Assigned directory area
· State Charter School Information
· Templates and example (attached)
· Template instructions
· Online charter schools
· Important Dates and Timeline
First, let me just say how excited I am to be a part of this project and the opportunity to work with each of you. Not only did we get enough Examiners to fill the 60+ segments of the directory—but we actually have a wait list of folks who will help if need be!
I will be out of the country for a funeral until September 3rd, and Michelle Trela will be the key contact during that time.
Feel free to answer eachother’s questions in the forum (the forum is linked through the homepage of http://www.charterschoolmom.com)
Explanation of the charter schools directory
The charter schools directory is an online resource that lists charter schools geographically. Each participating Examiner is given a portion of the schools to list, link, and be linked to under the main national directory.
The goal is to create a simple, searchable listing (think phone directory) of charter schools that is uniform looking and sorted by county.
After the launch of the charter schools directory, you can link to it for any of your charter school articles. You can link to local or national pages, depending on your story.
Helpful Charter School Facts
Below you will find sample text for the introduction to your area’s local charter school directory. You may use this text as is, or compose your own. Here are a few quick facts you may want to know prior to composing a charter school piece:
· All charter schools are public schools
· Charter schools do not charge tuition
· Charter schools receive public funds
· Charter schools are not magnet schools
· Charter schools are created with missions and/or themes
· The most common type of enrollment for charter schools is admission by lottery
There are a lot of myths surrounding charter schools. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly, read my Examiner articles, or visit my website www.charterschoolmom.com.
Sample text:
“Charter schools are tuition-free public schools. These schools provide education options for the communities they serve, with specific missions or themes. Most charter schools admit students by random lottery drawings.
The list below contains a geographical list of XXXX charter schools. Access a complete list of charter schools across the United States, plus charter school support organizations by visiting the Examiner Charter Schools Directory Hub.”
Assigned directory areas
If you share a state with other Examiners there is a digit listed next to the state abbreviation. Please expect a separate email from me explaining this to affected Examiners directly.
If there is a symbol next to your state—you have more than one state (lucky you!).

State Charter School Information
This is where you find your list of charter schools for each state!
Each state charter school organization has links through their websites to area charter schools.
Find your new “best state charter school friends” below by clicking an these maps www.edreform.com/charter_schools/maps/ or www.publiccharters.org/aboutschools/find. I will post a complete list on my Examiner pages (32 pages nationwide!).
Template Instructions
Attached you will find a notepad template and a sample.
Create your article in notepad prior to posting it in the Publishing Tool.
Here is what to do:
1. Gather your list of charter schools through the State Charter School links above.
2. Sort them according to (county) geographic location)
3. All you need is school name, city, grades served and website
4. Title should read Charter schools in …. State (May need to be refined to “Northern CA,” for example)
5. Type a short intro at the top of your notepad doc
6. First category is: Online charter schools
7. Sort County names alphabetically
8. List appropriate charter school names under the county
9. Hyperlink to school websites.
10. Contact state charter school org and confirm that you included new charter schools and removed obsolete information.
11. Save in Examiner Publication tool until official project launch (date TBA).
Online charter schools
List these after the intro, before the brick-and-mortar schools.
There are some interesting hybrids in this category. If the charter school has a facility where it does real-time teaching—it needs to be sorted under the county. If it’s truly distance learning—it’s online. I’d be glad to provide extra guidance if you get stuck on this.
All Examiners for that state should list all the online schools.
This means that states that have multiple Examiners repeat this information (because those are schools available for all those families).
Important dates
You are encouraged to start your piece of the project immediately.
Completed project (unpublished) is due September 13th, 2009.
Date to publish live is to be announced on or before September 13th, 2009.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me kp380134@yahoo.com (303) 881-3789 or Michelle Trela mtrela@examiner.com.
Have fun and I will check back in when I return from out of town September 3rd.
